Tri-Lakes Big Bass Festival

Area anglers, get ready: the Tri-Lakes Big Bass Festival is just around the corner in Sevier County.

This year’s event — the 30th since its inception — is set for Saturday, May 25, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on De Queen, Gillham, and Dierks lakes. Boat checks begin at 5 a.m.

Over $14,000 in prize money and door prizes will be paid out with five hourly prizes on each lake each hour. A grand prize of $1,500 will be paid for the largest fish overall, $1,000 for second place, $750 for third place, $500 for fourth place and $300 for fifth place overall.

Registration forms are available online and at the chamber office.

Plan to stay the evening and enjoy the 18th Benefit Concert featuring Exile, Richochet, and the Midnight Hurricanes. For tickets and more information, call 870-642-2446.

 

Events to help fund Quiz Bowl team

The De Queen High School 5A state champion quiz bowl team will be celebrated with events on May 20 and May 23. On May 20, 50 percent of all sales at Simple Simon’s Pizza will be donated to the team. On May 23 at the Church of Christ Family Center it will be Parents vs. Champs. Proceeds from the events will help fund the quiz bowl members to the national competition in Washington, D.C.

 

Memorial Day to be celebrated at Wickes Daniel Cemetery

Memorial Day will be celebrated at the Wickes Daniel Cemetery on Monday, May 27, beginning at 10:45 a.m. There will be a potluck lunch afterwards — outdoors, weather permitting; indoors if it’s raining. Bring your favorite foods and folding lawn chairs; paper plates and cups and cutlery will be provided.

 

Lewis Temple to host musical event Sunday

Lewis Temple Church is hosting a May Musical Extravaganza Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. Choirs, mimes, groups and soloists will be performing in the 48th annual event. Everyone is invited to attend.

 

Gillham VFD barbecue

The Gillham Volunteer Fire Department annual fundraising barbecue dinner will be held Saturday, May 18. Meal of pork, chicken, potato salad, cole slaw and beans will be provided by donation. The band Harmony will provide music. Meal starts at 4 p.m. and auction will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Sevier County Election Commission

There will be a meeting of the Sevier County Election Commission on Tuesday, May 21 at 5 p.m. to canvass the results of the 2019 School Elections. The meeting will be held in the county courthouse conference room. 

Other items pertaining to future elections may be discussed as necessary. This meeting is open to the public.

 

Belleville Cemetery Association 74th annual Homecoming celebration

The Belleville Cemetery Association will be having their 74th annual Homecoming celebration at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 2 at the historic Belleville Church, located two miles south of Lockesburg on Highway 317. Everyone is welcome to attend and those that do come are encouraged to bring a covered dish and a lawn chair to take part in the Homecoming potluck that will follow the services.

 

Advertise your business in chamber welcome bag

The De Queen/Sevier County Chamber of Commerce is putting together “Welcome Bags” for the members of the UA Archeological Survey and Archeological Society Teams that will be studying two Sevier County sites from June 5-22. These folks will be staying for several weeks and this is an opportunity for restaurants, specialty shops, boutiques and others in retail, rentals and service to get noticed and add to the bag.

Become a CASA  volunteer

At this time a child in foster care needs your help. You will be the person who will listen when no other person can, you will advocate for the best interest of these children in court, at school, and in the community. You will help them find a safe permanent home. You can support a child who has been abused and/or neglected. Become a volunteer with CASA!
