Border Lows Camping

The “Border Lows”, a local chapter of “Loners on Wheels” (, will have their monthly camp out from Aug. 14 to Aug. 18 at Salmon Lake Park, located at 247 Salmon Lake Road, Grapeland, Texas 75844. The park can be reached at 936-687-2594. Camping is $22 per night. All camping singles are welcome. VVA #278 Meeting

VVA #278’s next meeting will be Sunday, August 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Texas Elks Lodge at 3702 New Boston Road. The meal will begin at 1:30 p.m. We ask members to bring a covered dish and/or dessert to share. Topics to be discussed include: Veterans’ issues updates; committee reports; 2019 fundraising; upcoming events; 33rd Annual POW/MIA Vigil; critique and review of the 2nd “Wagons for Veterans”; review and critique of “Veterans Information Fair”; Memorial Day Services; etc. There will be chapter t-shirts at the meeting: M, L, and XL are $15, 2X are $18. VVA hats for sale at $5 each. 

Mobile Food Pantry

Harvest Regional Food Bank TEFAP USDA Commodity Mobile Pantry is coming to Sevier County on Wednesday, August 21. The food pantry will be parked at 304 South Pennock Street in Horatio from 10 a.m. until noon. Pantry boxes will be provided to the first 120 qualifying households. Operation Christmas Child’s Semi-Annual Garage Sale 

Operation Christmas Child’s semi-annual garage sale will be held Friday, August 23, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Saturday, August 24, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Family Activity Building of the First Baptist Church in Nashville (College and 2nd Streets). In order for this garage sale to be successful, we need your donations of no-longer-wanted but still-usable furniture, tools, dishes, lamps, decorations, clothing, art, collectables, electronics, toys, jewelry, books, etc. Volunteers will accept your donations, Monday – Wednesday, August 19 – 21, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., & Thursday, August 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Please mark your calendar with the donation times and especially the garage sale times. Thanks for your generous donations, which will help children in need around the world.

Fans available for seniors in need

Summer’s not over and the office of Dr. Randy Walker has fans available for senior adults age 60 and older who are in need.  Older individuals, on a fixed income, may struggle with rising temperatures during the summer months as they don’t turn on their air conditioning due to cost.  Anyone interested in receiving a fan, or knows of a senior in need should contact Beverly Reynolds, RN at 870-642-2390.

Chemistry Show for families

Families are invited to The Amazing Chemistry Show and Family Experience on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 5-8 p.m.  at the De Queen First Assembly of God, 1440 W. Collin Raye, De Queen. There is no cost. 

Families will be amazed and entertained by explosions, colored foam, liquid nitrogen and glow-in-the-dark solutions during Founded by Josh Denhart, The Amazing Chemistry Show ( is an educationally entertaining stage production using fast-paced and engaging science experiments to captivate kids and adults while sharing about the love God has for them.

In addition to this hour-long production, families are invited to participate in a hands-on science experience with more than 150 exhibits featuring rockets, magnets, electricity, magnification, slime and more.

Become a CASA volunteer

At this time a child in foster care needs your help. You will be the person who will listen when no other person can, you will advocate for the best interest of these children in court, at school, and in the community. You will help them find a safe permanent home. You can support a child who has been abused and/or neglected. Become a volunteer with CASA!
