Several folks have noticed that the Gillham News has been absent from The De Queen Bee newspaper. I have volunteered to give it a go until Dianne Rosson decides she is able to take up her journalist skills again.
I am the Gillham librarian, Suzie Tollett, so don’t be surprised if you get a phone call from me in search of news.
The most current event that is taking place is the Gillham Volunteer Fire Department’s Big Buck contest. There is a $10 entry fee and all proceeds go to the fire department. Deadline to enter is Nov. 9. Contest ends Dec. 31. There are three divisions: kids 16 and under, women’s division and men’s division. For more details and prizes you can pick up a form at the Gillham Library, Gillham Post Office or the Gillham Fire Department. The Gillham High School Alumni met Tuesday, Oct. 9. Mrs. Reva Kitchens has been voted the new president and is currently handling the secretary and treasurer duties, also. Long time board member Joyce Thompson has stepped down. She has been a dedicated board member for many years. She will be missed.
Gillham resident, Mrs. Francis Morris, is home and recovering from hip surgery. She has been seen driving about. We wish her a full and speedy recovery.
Michelle Miles’ daughter, Kaci, recently married and will be making her new home in Cove.
Lewis and Shana Newberry moved to Gillham around April of this year. Recently Shana was appointed to the vacancy on the Gillham City Council. Lewis will be running for that alderman position in the upcoming November election.
Mina Mizell is now back home in Gillham after her long stay with her daughter, who has been battling cancer. She recently retired from the Gillham Post Office.
Long-time resident of Gillham, Alicia Helms, her sister, Shala Lansdel, their mother, Teresa Sirmon of Horatio, spent their Sunday, Oct. 14 selling homemade baked goods for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. They raised $431. Way to go ladies!
We want to mention also, young Isaac Wisinger of Wickes and a frequent patron of the Gillham Library, won third place in the spelling bee at the Hoo Rah Day festival. Congratulations!
