Veronica Rivas, daughter of Jorge and Donna Rivas of De Queen, represented Sevier County 4-H this past week in Atlanta, Ga. Veronica is a member of both Lakeside and Teen Leaders 4-H Club.
While at the conference, she participated in leadership and community service activities including volunteering at local schools, museums, and cleaning parks and cemeteries. The group also toured some of the local sites.
Rivas was recognized for her 4-H career and accomplishments this past summer at the State 4-H Achievement Awards program held on the U of A Campus in Fayetteville.
Achievements like this opens the door for them to receive 4-H college scholarships. Rivas is currently a student at U of A in Fayetteville.
Rivas said, “Recently I was given the opportunity to attend the 2019 National 4-H Congress trip in Atlanta, Ga. Representing Arkansas, as well as Sevier County, was a huge honor that I will carry with me for a lifetime. Attending the workshops and events throughout the week improved my leadership skills and broadened my communication skills as I engaged with many other youth around the country. I attended a Healthy Gourmet Cooking workshop where they taught us how to live a healthier lifestyle and gave us tips on portion sizes and how to shop local. Another big event I enjoyed was the community service project. This project was a cleanup at the Atlanta History Center where we cleaned the center’s landscape by getting rid of all trash and pulling weeds from the garden areas. We later had the opportunity to attend the museum and see its fascinating exhibits. The experience I encountered on this trip was very enlightening and with this being said, I would like to thank everyone who helped make it possible. I want to especially thank my Sevier County Extension Office and my club leader, Debbie Seymour, for all they have done. Thank you.”
