James L. Kirk

Funeral services for US Navy retired senior chief ship’s serviceman SHCS James L. Kirk, 87, of Killeen, Texas was held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan 4th at Skyline Baptist Church.  Interment with full military honors will be at 1 p.m.. Jan. 18 at the Denison Cemetery in Idabel, OK.

Mr. Kirk died peacefully Dec. 30, 2019, with his family by his side.

He was born Dec. 26, 1932, the youngest of eight children in Cerro Gordo, Arkansas. He lived in Cerro Gordo until the family moved to Horatio, Arkansas in 1939. Upon graduating from Horatio High School, he joined the U.S. Navy on Dec. 19, 1950, and served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars as a ship’s storekeeper and ship’s serviceman. 

Senior Chief Kirk was awarded his highest rank of E-8 on Nov. 16, 1966, and was honorably discharged on June 27, 1972, after 21 years, five months and 29 days of active service. 

Upon retirement, Mr. Kirk later joined his brother in Killeen to begin a career in life insurance. Together they opened American Amicable Life Insurance offices in Killeen and Copperas Cove, Texas. He and his brother, Roger B. Kirk, served the local commmunity, soldiers and their families stationed at Fort Hood. 

Through the years, Mr. Kirk was awarded recognition in the hall of fame as a general agent, and he touched many people’s lives in both communities. He always felt it was an honor to be able to serve people when they needed it the most. 

Mr. Kirk was preceded in death by his parents, the late Rufus Clifton Kirk and Lucile Saloma Brazil of Horatio, AR; brothers, France Kirk of Horatio, AR, Rufus Harrell Kirk of Austin, TX, Willie Gerald Kirk of Lawton, OK, Roger Bruce Kirk of Killeen, TX, and George Marshall Kirk of Horatio, AR; and sister Geraldine Virginia Kirk of Cerro Gordo, AR.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Shirley J. Kirk of Killeen, TX; sister Mrs. Marjorie McMaster of Longview, TX; four children, James Michael Kirk and wife Maggie of Dallas, TX, Debra Lynn Weyer of Austin, TX, Clifton Daniels Kirk and his wife Donna of Abilene, TX, and Scott Allison Kirk of San Antonio, TX; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. 

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan 3rd at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Kirk’s grandsons: James Gillentine, Charles Kirk, James Ryan Kirk, Jared Kirk, Sean Kirk and Ian Kirk
