December’s school holidays are a season within a season for area basketball.  The holiday break brings a round of tournaments before the conference races begin in earnest.

De Queen’s senior high teams have just finished the Holiday Hoops for Hunger tournament at Russellville. The next order of business for the Leopards will be the annual Cossatot River tournament that begins Jan. 6 and concludes Jan. 11.

The second week of January is set to be a busy one for De Queen basketball. On Jan. 6 the junior high teams will travel to Wright City, Okla. On Jan. 9 the Cubs will host Mena.

In addition to the Cossatot tournament, the senior Leopards will host Nashville Jan. 7 and make a trip to Mena Jan. 9.

The schedule for Horatio is no less frentic. The Lions will begin the new year at the Mineral Springs tournament which is set for Jan. 4-9.

Horatio will host Murfreesboro for games with both senior squads, junior boys and seventh grade girls Jan. 7.

Both Lion senior and junior high teams are scheduled to play at Gurdon Jan. 10.
