HOT SPRINGS —De Queen’s junior high claimed its first win of the season Oct. 4 at Hot Springs. The Cubs downed the Trojans 29-26 in double overtime.

Jesus Marrufo hit a 23 yard field goal for the winning points.

The Cubs took an early lead with some trickery when Enrique Hernandez connected with Damontre Grant on a 47 yard halfback pass for a touchdown with 5:57 left in the first quarter.

The lead was short lived when the Trojans returned the ensusing kickoff 66 yards for a touchdown to tie at 6-6.

De Queen regained the lead when Donyea Whitmore went in from four yards out with 5:01 remaining in the second quarter.

Again the Trojans scored on the kickoff return, this one covering 89 yards. A two point conversion gave the home team a 14-12 lead.

Whitmore raced 61 yards to score and put the Cubs back on top at 18-14 with 1:59 left in the half.

With 5:32 in the third period a 15 yard run gave the Trojans a 20-18 edge, but two minutes later Maruffo crashed in from the two to put the Cubs on top once more at 26-20.

The only score in the fourth quarter was a 14 yard run by the Trojans that tied the game at 26-26 and forced overtime.

Whitmore rushed averaged 11 yards per carry, rushing 20 times for 220 yards.

On defense Dylan Williamson had eight tackles and defended two passes. Hernadez made six stops.

Marrufo made five tackles including one for a loss. Moore had five stops and broke up two passes.

Yonari Lorenzo had four tackles. Seth Mobbs made three, including one for a loss of yardage.
