LITTLE ROCK — Despite a shaky first half, the De Queen senior girls won the annual Joe T. Robinson tournament by downing the host team 39-32 in the Nov. 23 final.
Maddie Martin scored 13 points in the second half to lead the Lady Leopard comeback. Lizzie Denson put in seven points, all in the fourth quarter.
Playing without Josie Burke who was on a church mission trip, De Queen struggled to get the offense rolling. Only a free throw by Jera Cotten prevented De Queen from being scoreless in the opening period which ended with Robinson up 4-1.
Cotten put in four points, and Sydney Casteel went three for four at the line in the second quarter. The Lady Leopards scored 11 in the second, but Robinson had 12 to be ahead at the half by 20-12.
Martin tallied eight points in the third quarter as De Queen added 14 to its total. Robinson scored seven, just enough to lead 27-26 to start the final frame.
With Denson’s seven points, Martin’s five and a free throw from Ashlyn Chambers, DHS posted a 13-5 scoring advantage in the fourth.
Martin finished the game with 16 points. Denson and Cotten each scored seven, Casteel five and Chambers four.
De Queen made 10 of 19 free throws and committed 19 fouls.
Ashley Jones scored 14 points for Robinson and Alex Rouse 10. JTRHS had 19 fouls and sank 10 of 15 at the line.
DHS — Mills
The Lady Leopards opened the tournament by mercy ruling Little Rock Mills 60-21.
Quarter scores were 26-4, 44-11 and 58-11.
Ashlyn Chambers had three treys and a total of 21 points for De Queen. Maddie Martin had a 3-pointer and 11 points. Lizzie Denson and Josie Burke each tallied eight points. Jera Cotton scored six points and Sydney Casteel four.
Casteel had five rebounds. Burke made five assists. Martin had five steals and five assists in the game.
The Lady Leopards made six of eight free throws.
DHS— Bald Knob
In the second round the Lady Leopards defeated Bald Knob 52-31 after taking a 13-8 first quarter lead.
By the half De Queen led 32-14. It was 48-23 at the end of the third.
Martin led the Lady Leopards with 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Chambers had two treys and scored a dozen points. Burke had six points. Abby Ponce had five, including a three. Denson added three points.
De Queen sank five of eight free throws and committed seven fouls.
Regianna Ward scored 16 points for Bald Knob which had six fouls and went two of four at the line.
