MENA — The De Queen junior high football team shut out Mena 14-0 in their Oct. 5 contest. The game was rescheduled from Sept. 3 when Mena schools were closed due to flooding.
The Cubs dominated the game with 293 yards of total offense wand 14 first downs to Mena’s 99 and four.
A first quarter touchdown by Donovan Ester and a second period TD by Jonathan Bahina with Angel Gonzalez hitting both extra points was all the offense the visitors needed.
The Cubs stopped themselves more than the opposition did. De Queen had two turnovers inside the Mena 10 yard line and a third TD negated by a penalty.
The closest the home team came to scoring was when a long pass produced a first down inside the De Queen 15, but the defense held.
“Our defensive line -- Macaden Smith, Ramiro Bahena, Julio Sotelo and Gareth Quintero -- had a great night. They were behind the line of scrimmage all night,” said De Queen coach Jason Barker. “Our big guys had a good night both ways, offense and defense.”
Ramiro Bahena and Smith each had a sack when Jonathan Bahena had an interception.
The Cubs rushed 39 times for 253 yards. Jonathan Bahena had 20 carries for 124 yards. Ester had 18 for 120. Beau Morris ran once for nine yards and caught a pass for 11 yards.
Braeden Walton had two receptions for 29 yards. Ester completed three of eight attempts with two interceptions.
