TEXARKANA — Football season ended for De Queen at Texarkana as the Leopards fell to the Razorbacks of Arkansas High 42-9.
Texarkana completed an undefeated conference season to earn the top seed from 5A South in the post season playoffs that begin Friday. THS is the largest school in 5A after dropping down from 6A this year. With an unusual mixture of size and speed, not to mention college recruits, the Razorbacks appear capable of competing with the best in their old classifications.
They took the lead before their offense took the field. On the game's first play from scrimmage Adrian Mendoza gained four yards for the Leopards, but a penalty changed second and six into second and 11. On third and nine Texarkana's DeJordan Mask intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. The PAT kick made the score 7-0 with 121 seconds gone off the clock.
Following the kickoff, De Queen went four and out with Mack Carver's punt rolling to the THS 32. The Leopards held to force a punt. The snap eluded the punter, and Quinshawn Bennett made a tackle to give the Leopards the ball at the THS 7.
A sack on first down cost De Queen four yards. Two incompletions later, Edward Garcia hit a 28 yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 5:27 to go in the first.
De Queen could get no closer. The home team's second touchdown came on a 57 yard pass reception by Mask with 3:07 in the first. On the second play of the second quarter Mask caught a 15 yard pass for another TD.
Cameron Collier ran 78 yards to score with 8:03 in the half. Jadas Ross caught a 43 yard TD pass with 6:12 left in the period.
The final Texarkana touchdown came when Demetrius Charles returned an interception 37 yards to score with 4:38 in the half.
The only points in the second half came when Leopard Alexis Luna went around the right side to score from four yards out with 3:24 to go in the third quarter to make the tally 42-9.
Luna was De Queen’s leading rusher with 49 yards on nine carries. Kade Martin had 15 yards on three attempts and Bennett 12 yards on three carries.
Colby Cowley made three primary tackles and three assists with two tackles for lost yardage. Hayden Harp, Martin and Bennett each had three tackles.
