Ashdown — The Leopards had too many miscues to overcome. The De Queen football team fell to the Panthers 39-15 on a sweltering night at Ashdown on Friday.
The first came on the opening kickoff when the Leopards failed to contain an onside kick, Ashdown’s only type of kickoff.
The Panthers got the ball at the De Queen 30. On the first play from scrimmage Enrique Hernandez recorded a sack for a loss of four, but Ashdown got out of the hold and scored six plays later. Brett Bond went over from the one with 9:20 left in the first. The PAT kick was wide.
Hernandez covered the ensuing kickoff for De Queen at the Leopard 41. Marquez Ester moved the ball to midfield on first down. On second Kade Martin gained 12 to the AHS 38.
Six players later Ester scored on a 12 yard run over the right side. Melvin Cerda kicked the PAT to put De Queen up 7-6 with 5:50 remaining in the first.
Ashdown regained the lead on a 25 yard pass from Alex Keilbach to Memphis Holland with 3:45 left in the first. Chase Pearce and Sam Avalos stopped the run for two, but the Panthers led 12-7.
Starting at their 38, the Leopards managed to gain a first down at the Ashdown 25 on the running of Ester. At that point, events went down hill quickly.
Two losses, two false starts and a sack brought up fourth and 25. A high snap on the punt attempt gave the Panthers the ball at the De Queen 25.
A penalty put the Panthers in a third and 17 situation. They began to pull away when Bond scored on a three yard run with 9:25 remaining before halftime. This time the PAT kick was good for a 19-7 lead.
The Leopard turned away the next Ashdown drive. On second down inside the DHS 30, Chewy Marrufo stopped a screen pass for a loss of one. A pass to the endzone was incomplete with Pearce in tight coverage. The Panthers could not convert on fourth and eight when Martin nearly sacked the passer.
De Queen took over on its 20. Ester ran for a first down, but lost the ball on a fumble that was returned to the DHS 19. Two plays later Delrea Smith scored from the five. The PAT put Ashdown up 26-7 with 4:12 left in the half.
Ashdown scored early and late in the third quarter. The Panthers moved 65 yards in three play following the second half kick off. Smith scored from the nine yard line 46 seconds into the half. Smith caught a 20 scoring pass with 1:03 in the third for the Panthers’ final points.
De Queen’s second TD came on an 18 yard run by Ester with 10:33 remaining in the game. On the PAT attempt Cerda grabbed a bad snap and sprinted around the left side for two to make the final score 39-15.
